Echo of You
When 86-year-old Rene buys flowers, he always thinks about what color his wife would have chosen if she were alive. Like most people in this film, he spent more time with this partner than without. Through candid, revealing interviews, Echo of You presents a group of Danish men and women, all aged 80+.
With poignant openness and honesty, they share their thoughts on their life partnerships; lost loves who, one way or another, are no longer with them. They discuss the heartbreak of losing a life partner, and the ways in which life goes on. Filmmaker Zara Zerny, tenderly brings their individual voices together like a choir, interweaving them with abstract, dreamy images, music and artistic interpretations of their inner lives. Together, they form a collection of diverse perspectives on love, life, loneliness and death, merging into a unique body of
testimony.
A sensuous, life-affirming portrait of a generation slowly saying goodbye.

"In filmmaking, just like in life, everything has to be so fast these days. Sometimes, we forget what cinema is all about: it’s about listening, watching and just experiencing something new. I hope we can still go back to these basics sometimes." - Read an interview with director Zara Zerny over on the blog: https://truestoryfilm.blog/2025/05/23/echo-of-you/
"Zerny and cinematographer Jacob Sofussen shoot the interviews and adjoining segments with a lucid compassion; their closeups make beautiful parchment out of wrinkled skin...This is an important film filled with contemplative purpose." - Guardian
"a wondrous experience, which immediately says everything about the power of memory....Echo of You reaches your soul" - Business Doc Europe
"one of the best documentaries of this year’s festival season....Like a great orchestra conductor, Zerny pieces together a small, non-fiction masterpiece" - Cineurope
"A poetic and touchingly honest film about lifelong love and what remains when it disappears. The echoes of love resound in the poignant, humorous and life-affirming stories of those left behind." - CPH:DOX
"a group portrait of a unique generation that will not be with us for much longer. With their passing, their stories will perish, along with the furnishings and objects they have valued for decades, ranging from wooden ceilings, voile curtains and pendulum clocks to double rows of framed photos of generations of their relatives and forebears." - IDFA, Luminous Competition
