Larry (They/Them)

Larry (They/Them)

A look at the intimate world of young non-binary trans photographer Laurence Philomène as they put together their first book, Puberty, a series of self-portraits documenting their transition
during hormone therapy. Mirroring Philomène’s autobiographical approach, LARRY (they/them) highlights the cinematic power of the artist’s vibrant, colour-saturated images and above all, their willingness to share their story with authenticity and vulnerability.

Gender non-conforming identities, body diversity and the challenges of self-affirmation are also explored through an exclusive foray into Philomène’s family and community. Beyond the story of individual transformation, the film chronicles a society that is likewise transitioning, evolving as it grows.

A celebration of those who refuse to conform, LARRY (they/them) is a luminous and engaging portrait of the complex, often misunderstood multiplicity of trans and non-binary identities and
experiences, bringing to the screen one of the most inspiring and original voices of their generation and an LGBTQ+ community icon.

"For non-binary trans photographer Laurence Philomène, art, life and identity are intimately entwined. Though drawing from art history, their photographs strike a distinctive note with their pastel colours; capturing queer subjects, including Philomène themself, in restful poses, these portraits bloom in soft hues of pink, purple, blue – the full rainbow. This style seems to seep into Catherine Legault’s intimate documentary, which captures not only the artist’s creative process but also their daily life with vibrancy" - Guardian

“Legault delivers a heartfelt depiction of the human experience within the non-binary community. We learn to see the world and others not in stark tones of black or white, but in an eye-popping, vibrant color replete with tonal variations.” - HorrorBuzz

"paints a luminous and committed portrait of the complex and often misunderstood multiplicity of trans and non-binary identities and experiences, revealing to us at the same time one of the most original and inspiring voices of her generation" - Fugues

"that's the beauty of the film, which doesn't present a transition as one might expect (before-and-after), but rather offers snapshots of an evolving daily life" - La Presse
