Mata Ne is about a woman tracing her roots. She travels, together with her mother, to her second home in Japan. It is about them visiting the almost one hundred years old grandmother on the remote island of Okinawa. This reunion feels like a farewell at the same time, somewhere in between being home and alienation.
"This film was an emotional journey in several respects: The reunion with my bedridden grandmother after a very long time. The encounter between my mother and my grandmother; it was intense and touching to see both of them so strong and vulnerable at the same time. The journey to Okinawa also meant returning to my second home, which is strongly connected with a feeling of longing - and belonging somewhere. Mata Ne is based on thoughts on identity, growing old, dying, and rootedness. My thoughts take shape in this filmic essay about three generations of women and their lives lived very differently."
