The Safest Place in the World

The Safest Place in the World

The film is a portrait of Marlon, a young man whose life turned upside down after a great socio-environmental tragedy: his city was buried by the collapse of a dam in Brazil. ‘The safest place in the world’ is how he refers to his original home, today surrounded by cameras and security.

"We went to Mariana, impacted by the news of a 14 meter wave of mud that destroyed not only Bento Rodrigues, which is the city of Marlon, but also kilometers of devastation to the sea, in Espírito Santo. We started talking to the victims and decided to return to their homes with them, and it was very powerful to see a city buried.

It's important to tell this story because mining is not restricted to just one place. Mining is in every country, in the objects we use. And the film talks about the consequences of this exploration just for profit, without thinking about sustainability. And we need to reflect on this and on our consumption." - Aline Lata, Helena Wolfenson, Directors.

"looks at the individual cost of a national disaster....a company archeologist sifts through the mud, looking for remnants of a town which is still precisely mapped out in Marlon’s head. Smiling ruefully, he memorises the shape of the mountains on the horizon, convinced that within his lifetime, they will be gone." - ScreenDaily

"The deadly 2015 Mariana dam failure was one of the worst environmental disasters in Brazilian history, leaving hundreds of residents in the district of Bento Rodrigues displaced. Showing the tidal waves of muddy water engulfing countless houses, the harrowing mobile phone footage that opens this intimate documentary witnesses the sheer scale and horrors of the catastrophic event." - Guardian

**Winner** - Canon International Competition Award, Doc Lisboa - "The film fights against the indifference of human and environmental extractivism, while showing the importance of preserving natural and emotional places."
