That Cloud Never Left

That Cloud Never Left

In Daspara, a village 200 km outside of Calcutta, hundreds of toys are produced every day: rattles, whistles, windmills, all made by hand. The raw materials used are old strips of film, detritus from the archives of Bollywood. What matters isn’t so much the pictures that are used by the workers, but rather the material and the clicking sound that the strips of film make.

As the villagers follow this routine with uninterrupted monotony, a few narratives leak out from the shredded analogues of film and infuse the place with phantasmagoria.

Dir. Yashaswini Raghunandan - 65min - 2019 - India

"This mix of mundane life and magical daydreams lends an otherworldliness to this little village, as if the content of the cut-up film strips has seeped into everyday life." The Guardian
