The Borderline Collection

The Borderline Collection

Borderline is a collection of six creative documentary films set on six intriguing borders that surround and divide the European continent. By following the footsteps of people who encounter these frontiers on a daily basis, Borderline explores the significance of borders while addressing the common challenges and issues of our contemporary society.

A border connects and separates at the same time, and the diverse layered contrasts and similarities on each side provide the ideal breeding ground for relevant and interesting stories. What are its functions, what is kept in and out? Seven talented European filmmakers delve into the daily reality of six intriguing border regions at the end of Fortress Europe, sharing stories that are inextricably linked to today’s complex history of Europe in general, the people who live there and their origins in particular.

A major international co-production, Borderline wants to contribute to a new understanding of borders, the relativity of our freedom, cultural and national identities, and to generate new and critical perspectives on European society and its future.

From forgotten borders separating communities and families with the Schengen fence to invisible borders hidden deep in the sea, to utopian borders where a new micronation is being established, the six episodes represent the social, cultural and geographical diversity of the continent, but also reveal the common social and political challenges that we all face today and that will have a significant impact on our future.
